OUR COMMUNITY

The Isle of Muck may be small, but its sense of community is mighty, with everyone pulling together to make island life work. Muck is privately owned by the MacEwen family. The main part of the island is a working sheep and cattle farm, and tourism is also an important part of the economy. The island also has a primary school, and the doctor/ANP visits the island fortnightly.

Muck thrives on a spirit of collaboration, with community-run assets like the Community Hall and a strong culture of volunteering supporting daily life. Living here requires teamwork in every sense – from unloading freight off the ferry together, to coming together for community celebrations and events.

The island’s residents are known for their warmth and hospitality, welcoming visitors to a variety of local events throughout the year. Muck may be small, but its heart is big, and it’s this spirit of unity that makes it such a special place to live and visit.

Muck Community Enterprise

In 1992 the Community set-up the Isle of Muck Community Enterprise which owns and manages the community’s assets. Due to the island having no grid connection, the community worked to raise funds to install the island’s first wind powered electricity grid. In 1999 the scheme was completed, and Isle of Muck Power Ltd (a trading subsidiary of the Enterprise company) became operational, and the Community experienced 24-hour electricity (when windy) for the first time. Up until this point electricity had been provided by diesel generators, operating limited hours, morning and evening. Find out more about our community electric scheme in the link below.

Muck Community Hall

In 2012, the Community Enterprise celebrated a major milestone with the opening of Muck Community Hall. This purpose-built facility offers a spacious sports hall, a welcoming meeting room, a fully equipped kitchen, and essential amenities, including toilets and a shower. Beyond its practical features, the hall also houses a heritage area, a small library, and activities like foosball and pool. For added convenience, visitors can even make use of the on-site washing machine. More than just a building, Muck Community Hall is the heart of the island—bringing people together, preserving local heritage, and providing a space for both work and play.

Future Plans

The Isle of Muck Community Enterprise is working on a project to create more housing for the local community. Working alongside the Communities Housing Trust, they’ve started the process of applying for capital support and getting the necessary planning and building approvals, setting the foundation for future construction.
