SEA SWIMMING

The island’s waters are ideal for sea swimming, offering a refreshing and immersive way to experience Muck’s rugged coastline. A local group known as the Muck Mermaids takes to the water year-round, embracing the invigorating effects of cold-water swimming—even in the depths of winter. Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or a newcomer looking to try wild swimming for the first time, Muck has several stunning spots to take the plunge.

New Year Dip

A much-loved island tradition, the New Year’s Day swim is not for the faint-hearted. Those brave enough to welcome the year with an exhilarating dip gather on the shore, usually after the competitive New Year’s Day hockey match, before sprinting into the icy Atlantic waters. The event is as much about community and celebration as it is about the swim, with hot drinks and laughter shared afterwards.

Gallanach Bay

One of the island’s most picturesque swimming locations, Gallanach Bay offers calm, clear waters and breathtaking views. As you glide through the water, you’ll be treated to a stunning panorama of the mountainous Isle of Rum and the distinctive profile of Eigg on the horizon. The sheltered bay makes it a relatively gentle spot for swimming, with golden sands underfoot and a chance to spot marine life such as seals bobbing in the waves.

Tips for Swimming on Muck
